At Meadowbrook Physiotherapy Clinic, we incorporate Pilates (as developed by Joseph Pilates) exercises as part of every spinal rehabilitation program. The reasons for this become apparent with the following core values and principles of Pilates:

The premise of control is to allow your mind to control the movement. To identify and focus on certain muscles conducting the movements to better exercise and target strength and conditioning. At its foundation, it is about you being in control of your body.

Focussing on deep full breathes, breathing through the nose on inhale and out through the mouth on exhale. Linking breath control to movements by exhaling upon exertion and inhaling upon positioning. This would further enhance body awareness and concentration on engaging your core/ centre.

To practice mindfulness of movement rather than just doing the movement. An awareness and focus of your body whilst conducting movement demands concentration for performance of proper form. In many respects, exercise technique and performance of movement is more important than the exercise themselves.

In conjunction with mindfulness and breath control, exercises are set out to challenge the body (strengthening) and flow in a sequence from one position to another. The momentum of each exercise set flows onto the next to create a sense of flowing energy and enhance stamina.

Pilates being known as a ‘core’ and effective pelvic floor strengthening program, the focus is on identifying the focal point of the body where all movement arises – your centre. By ensuring this focal point is strong, it will provide protection and stability to the spine and transfer power to limb movements. There has been debate over what our ‘centre’ is but generally it encompasses muscles of the abdominals, upper and lower back, and hips.

Proper form, alignment, and execution are essential in Pilates. This encourages spatial awareness of your limbs in space. By practicing repetitively and concisely, it aims to prevent injuries from occurring as movements become second nature.
