Ergonomics at Work

We all fall into the trap of staying in the same positions for prolonged periods. No matter how good your posture is, whether sitting or standing – the body does not like static positions. The key is to take regular breaks throughout the day to change your posture, even if it is just to the water cooler or bathroom.

Tips when Sitting

  • Maintaining natural ‘S’ curve of your spine
  • Hips slightly lower than knees
  • Chest up, shoulders relaxed
  • Forearms horizontal and rested on arm rest, table top where appropriate
  • Feet flat on floor

Tips when Standing

  • Maintaining natural ‘S’ curve of your spine
  • Chest up, shoulders relaxed and down
  • Feet at hips width apart with equal body weight through both legs
  • Head central with chin slightly tucked in
  • Head not rotated or tilting

Postures to avoid

  • Slouching
  • Twisting
  • Bending for long periods
  • Prolonged sitting or standing unevenly
  • Lowering your chair

Maintaining your posture ineffectively can result in unequal weight distribution through joints and cause muscles to unnaturally guard your body. This would eventually result in aches and pains.
